"Music teaches us to appreciate the beauty around us. Music is a language, music is art, music is beauty. Make some noise, make some music, Parkside will make sure you learn as well as enjoy music!"

Music study at the Grade 9 level is intended to develop students’ understanding and appreciation of music through a focus on practical skills and creative work. Students will find in music a source of enjoyment and personal satisfaction and will gain creative problem-solving skills, individual and cooperative work habits, knowledge of themselves and others, a sense of personal responsibility, and connections to their communities and future careers.

Performance techniques and an understanding of musical history are of major importance for music students. Through informal presentations and more formal performances, students not only develop their technique but also use music to communicate their aesthetic and personal values. By experiencing, analyzing, and commenting on the performances of others, students enhance their understanding of the values of other musicians and cultures.

Students develop their awareness of the elements of music (pitch – melody, harmony, and tonality; duration – beat, metre, rhythm, and tempo; dynamics and other expressive controls; timbre; texture; and form) and apply them to create and perform works that are related to their personal interest and experience. Students also refer to the elements of music when reviewing, evaluating, and reflecting and commenting on their own and others’ creative work.

After almost two years of being away from Parkside, I still miss the constant ruckus of the music room and all it has to offer!
No matter how quiet or loud you are, no matter your personality and no matter what path you choose, music brings everyone together to create something magical! No matter how you participate whether it’s playing an instrument in band or even just hanging out during lunchtime, music at Parkside will always be an amazing place for anyone. Never worry if you’ll fit it, or if it’s right for you, because you’ll fit right in!

When I reflect on my time in high school, I remember the Parkside band as not only a place to explore and enhance our skills as musicians, but to develop friendships with other students from all different grades and fields of interest. The band has football players, cheerleaders, members of the robotics team, student council, volleyball, soccer, rugby, curling -- you name it, someone in band does it. I can't recommend the PCI music program highly enough! You'll make memories you'll never forget, friends you'll cherish forever, and the things you learn about yourself will help you grow into whatever person you choose to be.

When I think back on my happiest memories of my time at Parkside, they all seem to connect back to one of my Performing Arts classes. Whether it was finding my first bursts of confidence in front of a crowd in my grade 10 drama class, being part of an amazing group of people in band, making some of my best friends in the vocal music and musical theatre classes, or taking to the stage in front of the community in all three of the Musical Theatre productions during my time in high school, Performing Arts classes at Parkside were not just an integral part of my high school experience, but also were crucial to shaping my future. I know that had I not been involved in these classes at Parkside I would not be the person I am today!

Look just take music. It will keep you sane, it will teach you that dedication does pay off, it will open you up to new cultures and the world as a whole. It's a universal language and it can even help you communicate with yourself. It's an outlet and music will always be there for you.
Highschool is great, but let's be honest the fun part isn't the homework, it's the people you meet and stories you make over those years. You will look back on thoese years and remember them fondly but you have to try and make it fun too. Join music, meet some friends, get outside of your comfort zone, have fun and make some noise.

When I started high school I never considered joining the music program because I felt I wasn’t a great instrumentalist in grade 8 and didn’t know there was a vocal program. My friend joined the choir at the beginning of the semester and by Thanksgiving convinced me to stay one night after school to try it out. That was one the best decisions of my life. I joined the choir, and enrolled in the vocal classes for the remainder of high school. I was very nervous about doing solos at first but with Ms.Southern’s support eventually it got easier. Music classes became a great release from the stress of all the other classes and my second home. I completed a science major in university and work for a Public Health now but have never forgotten my PCI Music classes. I have joined a couple choirs now as an adult to keep that spirit alive. Great friendships also still exist to this day because of the music program. Highly recommend becoming part of the music family!

"I have to admit, if anything ever went wrong I knew music was a safe haven for students like myself. Music and singing helped push me through being bullied and gave me a reason to sing my heart out. It was a reason to learn and love while laughing. I truly do miss vocal music classes and singing every day if you get a chance, music will lift your soul."
